Seek Perfection of Character
The heart of JKA karate. This principle teaches that the true purpose of training is not fighting ability, but self‑improvement. Every stance, strike and kata becomes a tool for shaping discipline, humility and emotional control.
In our Darwin dojo, this means showing respect, training with intention, and striving to become a better person every day — inside and outside the dojo.
Be Faithful
“Makoto” means sincerity. To be faithful is to act with honesty, loyalty and integrity. Students are encouraged to honour their commitments, train with sincerity, and protect the true spirit of Shotokan karate.
Faithfulness builds trust — between students, instructors and the wider community.
Endeavour
This principle represents the spirit of effort. Karate is not mastered through talent but through consistent, determined practice. Students learn to push through challenges, refine details and embrace the long journey of improvement.
Endeavour builds resilience — a skill that carries into school, work and life.
Respect Others
Respect is the foundation of all martial arts. Bowing, etiquette and courtesy are not rituals — they are expressions of humility and awareness. Students learn to treat training partners with care and honour the dojo environment.
A respectful karateka strengthens the community around them.
Refrain from Violent Behaviour
Karate gives power — this principle teaches responsibility. Students learn to control their emotions, avoid unnecessary conflict, and use their skills only for protection and self‑defence.
A true JKA practitioner is strong, calm and safe to be around — never reckless or aggressive.
